I don't know about you but I find buying clothes for my husband a lot harder then picking them out for myself - I'm never quite sure if the trendy seasonal colours are unisex or not along with all the other basic confusion I have about the differences there are between men's and women's fashions!

Tip Top to the rescue and they have been kind enough to share with us the tricks and tips for dressing the boy this season!

1. The season’s colours to look for are deep burgundies, rich hues of purple, a muted shade of green and a bold mid-blue.

2. What black was, blue is. And grey for that matter. While he can still wear his black suit, it’s time to lead him towards charcoal grey or mid-blues, both of which are now looking very sophisticated. They’re both great anchor colours for more vibrant shirts and ties too. And if he’s willing to go the extra mile, try blue or grey in the season’s suit patterns that are making a serious comeback: window pane, glen check and herringbone.

3. Fit. It’s all about the fit. And the fit is changing; men’s suits and sports jackets are a little leaner even if he isn’t! You may have to lead him towards a suit that fits as close to the body as he’s comfortable with. But don’t confuse this with tight – he needs to look at ease in it. If he’s been wearing fuller cuts he’ll have to adjust to the feeling of a closer fitting jacket – and he will, almost immediately.

4. They’re back and they’re back big! Sports jackets, dormant these last few years, are looking terrific and they’re perfect for business. Fabrics are lush (think suede and velvet), colours range from rich to muted. He can be a bit bolder here than he might be with a suit as long as he pairs it with a neutral pant. And yes, of course he can wear it with a pair of dark jeans making the sports jacket a perfect transitional piece from day to evening.

5. It’s called the “break” and it’s the horizontal crease that forms at the bottom front of the pant legs when they are hemmed. The rule: narrower pants get less of a break. And since pretty much all suit pants are at least a little narrower now, keep an eye on how they are breaking when your sales associate hems them. And remember, pants should sit at his waist (not his hips) and he should be able to fit one finger into the waistband comfortably.

6. Here’s the fun part: mixing shirts and ties. This is where you can really get involved. One of the best trends of the season is mixing patterns – a patterned shirt gets a differently pattered tie. Don’t be afraid; just make sure that one pattern is more muted than the other. A bold striped or foulard printed tie that’s colour coordinated with a shirt with a small gingham check can be terrific. Your Tip Top sales associate knows how far you can go and still look right for business.

7. Tie width? There’s a rule to follow. Narrow lapels require a narrower tie and a wider lapel can handle a regular width tie. Simple. And the tie knot? Keep it no larger than the size of the shirt collar.
They’re called “suit separates,” and it may be the way to go. It’s simply buying the jacket separate from the pants which means he isn’t stuck with a jacket that fits perfectly and pants that need to be altered beyond recognition. If you’re partner isn’t an easy, “off the rack” fit, it’s definitely the way to go.

8. “Three piece suit” is not a scary word. It’s a very stylish one, in fact, as three piece suits take their rightful place in the style lexicon. Tip Top Tailors, ever practical, sells them separately. No heavy tweeds, no bold patterns; we suggest you choose a vest in the same pattern as the suit. For a slim and modern look, make sure the vest is cut close to the body and hemmed at the belt. And keep that vest buttoned up – except for the bottom button!

9. New Rule: “Coat First.” That’s what people see first, his coat. A 40” coat that falls an inch or two above the knees in this fall’s subtly narrower cut will make him look taller and leaner. And, the versatile new pea jackets will update his look.
