We don't. And neither do you! This year you can attend New York Fashion Week via live webcasts! The 88 runway shows taking place in the Tents at Lincoln Center, as well as the 18 shows at Milk Studio will be available online: Zeitbyte, a digital media company, will be webcasting all the runway shows to Stylist.com as well as iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android handsets!

The Fashion's Night Out yesterday was mostly glamorous but there were a few red carpet mishaps. We had mismatched patterns, stripper's style and artsy gone fartsy. A good night!

Go pastel from head to toe(nails) - Wella and Orly help you out!

Pastel coloured hair.  It started at New York Fashion Week, as these things often do, initially with Proenza Schouler and Zac Posen Spring 2010 shows and really caught on at Cynthia Rowley's Fall 2010 show when Wella master colourist Eva Scrivo created the coloured extensions for Cynthia.  The designer loved it so much that she went back to Eva's salon and got her own hair coloured with navy streaks.  There was no stopping it after that and the celebrity crowd has gotten on the bandwagon.  Ashley Olsen, Kelly Osbourne, Drew Barrymore and Lady Gaga have embraced the trend.  You know that means it's only a matter of time before the trend catches on with us "normal"(I'm obviously discluding Christelle from this group) people.  Eva used Loleston Perfect Special Mix colours to get the colours for Cynthia Rowley's show and she has also now started selling coloured clip-in extensions customized at her salon for people with hair commitment issued.  You can find a Wella salon near you here to help you get your own pastel look.  That's probably a better idea then attempting this look yourself at home with a bottle of bleach and some food colouring...

Lancome's makeup secrets from L'Wren Scott during New York Fashion Week

You know how much I love Fashion Week makeup, some of the time it's totally unwearable for anyone not on the runway, but in this case, it's smoky, it's seductive and totally doable for us non-model folk - I love it!

Lancôme Artistic Director for Make-up, Aaron De Mey was once again at the L’Wren Scott show where he created a glam rock make-up look to complement the clothes.

After prepping the skin, Aaron applied a layer of Teint Idole foundation with his fingers, then added a layer of Shu Uemura loose powder for a matte finish.  He used Blush Subtil in Shimmer Mocha Havana on the apples of the cheeks and long the cheekbone, all the way to the hairline.

Now my favourite part, the eyes which were super dramatic.  Aaron used Ombre Magnétique in Black from the upcoming Fall 2010 collection all over the lid and all the way up to the brow bone.  He then used the silver Ombre Magnétique shade around the tear duct to catch the light and add impact.  Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony was used along the waterline.  Multiple coats of the new Hypnôse Drama mascara on upper and lower lashes completed the look.

The lip colour was kept neutral so as not to distract from the hypnotic eyes so L’Absolu Rouge in Rich Cashmere was used over which he put La Lacque Fever in Sensation, a glossy nude shade coming this fall.

Super fun was the model’s blue-grey manicures with a special colour that Lancôme customized just for L’Wren – and if they know what is good for them, will be whipping up a bigger batch for you and me.

Things get hairy at New York Fashion week for Sebastian Professional with Betsy Johnson, Band of Outsiders, William Rast and Zero + Maria Cornejo

I was excited to hear that the Sebastian team acquired some Toronto flair in the form of our very own Daniel DiTomasso, who made his fashion week debut when he joined the 17 member Sebastian Professional stylist team for Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week in New York City.  Daniel joined the team from Mane Society Salon and Spa in Toronto to execute four uniquely created looks for Band of Outsiders (above pictures), Betsy Johnson, Zero +  Maria Cornejo and William Rast.  The creative, flawlessly-executed styles crafted by this year’s hair team left an impression on the designers, show attendees and media long after the show was over.

Under the leadership of Sebastian Professional Stylist Design Team Member Thomas Dunkin, Daniel worked non-stop backstage to create show-stopping ‘dos for some of today’s hottest designers.  For the Band of Outsiders presentation on February 13th, low-slung, ‘70s-style ponytails were created to complement the preppy-casual, vintage-inspired essence of the clothes.  On February 14th, the stylist team brought to life Betsey Johnson’s Bridgette Bardot-inspired sexy cowgirl look with unkempt, playful pigtails to complete the western-themed collection.  At the Zero Maria Cornejo show on February 15th, Daniel and the team gave the models’ a gently tousled style that was effortlessly chic and the perfect complement to Maria’s highly crafted tailoring.  The hair look brought to life the essence of the clothes - sexy withoug trying too hard.  To close out their Fashion Week experience, the stylists crafted a pretty-yet edgy windswept hair look to match William Rast's biker girl style.

I think the Betsey Johnson and Rast looks are so cool that I begged for the behind the scenes secrets and Sebastian was kind enough to cough them up.  I hope you enjoy and keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming interview with the man himself, Daniel DiTomosso!

Wella does New York Fashion Week with style!

New York Fashion Week is over but the memory of the hair lives on and inquiring minds want to know how the runway looks at DKNY and Cynthia Rowley were created.  Never ones to keep something from me when asked nicely,  lead colourist,  Eva Scrivo and the Wella professionals that crafted the runway looks were kind enough to share their secrets.

CYNTHIA ROWLEY
The Look: A sleek, natural ponytail accented with the striking contrast of an artificial colored hair extension placed off center for an added tuft of textured fringe.

The Hair Color: Wella Professionals Koleston Perfect Special Mix shades were used to completely saturate the natural hair extensions with rich, vibrant, jewel-toned shades of the collection. The sophisticated nuances of the Special Mix collection allow for creativity without limits – turning any color fantasy into a reality on the runway or in real life. The multi-dimensional tones and layers reveal sensuous colors in a range of shades, while embedded with an element of surprise.

Step-by-Step Styling 

1. Section hair off and working from back of the head to the front, prepare hair with System Professional Ultimation hair spray for added texture and shine. 

2. Create texture within each section by using a combination of a curling iron and crimping iron for non-uniform waviness. 

3. Place Wella colored hair pieces that have been crimped within sections of the natural hair so that the extensions blend in seamlessly. 

4. Pull the hair back into a soft ponytail at the nape of the neck with the ends flowing naturally, while allowing the streaks of color to show through for added dimension.

The Look: A refined side-swept ponytail projects a sexy equestrian vibe with a subtly strong, yet not too masculine look.

The Hair Color: Using Wella Professionals’ new Blondor collection to achieve the palest of blondes, and both the Koleston Perfect permanent and Color Touch demi-permanent collections to create a gorgeous palette of naturals, handpainted extensions were created within the natural color palette of the models’ hair. The range reflects beautiful dimension in a variety of hues - from medium brown to a beautiful spectrum of blonde shades.

Step-by-Step Styling 

1. Prepare damp hair with System Professional Volumagic and blow dry with a large round brush, creating a soft wave and giving direction for the side part. 

2. Rake hands through hair to loosen the waves, pulling to the side of the part and fasten the low side ponytail. 

3. Leave hair on the opposite side of the ponytail loose around the face to balance the asymmetry of the look. 

4. Lightly smooth System Professional Hypercurl on the length of the ponytail for separation and added texture.

This post so makes me want to grow my hair out!

Lippmann Collection polishes the runway at Badgley Mischka and Lela Rose!

 

Sometimes it's the smallest details that are the coolest - as proved by the model's nails at the Badgley Mischka show during fashion week.  Deborah Lippmann used Marquee Moon - a futuristic sequined silver glitter polish from the Lippmann collection to add a cool vibe to the runway.

Over at the Lela Rose show, Deborah debuted a colour launching this fall called Across the Universe - described as a navy base with different shades of blue and green sequins that resembles both the sky and the water to compliment the girly frocks at that show.  I can't wait to see this one in person!  The Lippmann collection can be found at Holt Renfrew, Murale and various other stores in Canada.  US and Canada can go here to find your closest location.

Make Up For Ever joins Thuy for New York Fashion Week!

Cool and fresh was the look Make Up For Ever was going for at the Thuy Fall 2010 Fashion Show at the Salon in Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday.  The look was created by Make Up For Ever Alliance team member, Lottie who served as key make up artist for the show and wanted a look to complement the jewel tones of the collection.

Complexion & Cheeks:  Lottie first applied HD Invisible Cover Foundation to perfect the models’ complexion.  Next, she created a contour on the cheeks using Mat Bronze #2, and then applied more bronzer high on the apple of the cheeks.  The look was set with Super Matte Loose Powder #12 on the t-zone.

Eyes:  To create a sheer, shimmery gold wash on the eyes, Star Powder #920 was applied to the entire eye area starting at the lid and extending beyond the brow and temple.  Pan Cake Foundation #3 was then applied to the temples to illuminate the skin.  The eyes were finished with Smoky Lash Mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. 

Lips:  Lottie mixed Flash Color #1 with a hint of Flash Color #17 to get a matte, blood red stained mouth.  She applied the Flash Color with her finger tips to blot it onto the mouth.

Marc Jacobs: Grey, Gold and Fabulous!

Marc Jacobs presented a lovely Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection yesterday, despite the fact he only used a couple of gray shades and a touch of gold. Boring, you say? No, it's clean, fluid, very wearable and yet the occasional glitter and shimmer bring the glamour back when needed.

Estée Lauder joins Derek Lam for New York Fashion Week!

Would it surprise you to know that in their 64 year history, Estée Lauder has never taken part in New York Fashion Week?!  Until yesterday that is - they were the sponsor of the makeup and nail beauty look at the Derek Lam Fall 2010 runway show that took place at Capitale.  How much do you love this look - bold blue eyes, copper lips, bare cheeks and neutral nails!  The look was created by Creative Makeup Director, Tom Pecheux and carried out by Tom and his team of 15 artists.  Meanwhile, famed manicurist, Jin Soon Choi and her team polished the 22 model's nails with a new Estée Lauder polish that was tested backstage.

New York Fashion Week: Highs and Lows

New York Fashion Week is not over yet but let's look at what Fall 2010 will look like:

BCBC by Max Azria - This collection was a  play on color-blocked silks, geometric silhouettes and layers. It's interesting, yet very commercial and a good follow-up for the Spring collection.

Charlotte Ronson - Does the world need this clothing line? Probably not.

Ygal Azrouel mixed knits and leather using architectural lines. 

Jason Wu (below) used gold and warm colors, plaid, and neutrals for his evening gowns. His collection was really hit or miss for me. I like the red and gold dress or the tan feathery dress (left) but hated the some of the styling or that last balloon dress (right).
