Microdermabrasion and mud at Avenue Skin Care followed by Reflexology at Happy Foot Spa!

Is there anything better then a day of spa-ing in Yorkville? If there is, I can't think of what it would be!

To start things off, I went to see Christina at Avenue Skin Care to smooth out my summer skin sins with some microdermabrasion and a mud mask.

What made it a different experience for me was how much time and care Christina took with actually taking a good look at my skin before actually doing anything. Most of the time I go for a facial and they may ask you what your skin type is but rarely do they actually look at your face much before they start slapping stuff on it! Christina wanted to know and see what parts of my face were sensitive before starting the procedure so as not to further irritate any sensitive bits. What was also nice was during the entire procedure she actually pointed out areas of concern and how to fix them which was really very helpful! She finished me off with a mud mask which tingled a bit at first as it sucked all the crap out of my face.

If you like instant gratification treatments, this combo is the way to go, there is nothing else that will make your skin immediately feel so smooth and look so radiant!

The secret of course is the accent - Christina is from Romania and I'm absolutely convinced that estheticians with a European accent of some sort do a much better job then those without. This goes right along with my theory that cleaning products that don't smell like lemon don't actually clean anything.

Have your own blissful skin experience at Avenue Skin Care - 110 Cumberland Street, Suite 200 - 416-962-0001 - www.avenueskincare.com.

Now that my face was in order, it was time to take care of my feet!

I've actually had reflexology once before and it was the most painful thing that I have ever paid money to have done to me so I'm actually pretty surprised (and impressed) that I had the guts to try it again - but I figured with a name like Happy Foot Spa it was something that really needed to be done!

If you aren't familiar with Reflexology, it's an ancient practice from Egypt, Indian and China and is based on the idea that tension in different areas or zones on the feet and legs correspond with tension in other areas of the body. The natural massage practice relieves pain, tension and increases relaxation in the body through stimulating the reflex areas on the foot. The treatment helps with all kinds of issues: diabetes, high blood pressure, poor circulation, sleep issues, migraines, back pain, hormonal imbalance, digestive problems and stress related conditions.

The reflexology treatment starts with a herbal footbath to relax (and I assume clean) your feet and while you are soaking, you are "treated" to a neck and shoulder massage. I say "treated" because the sweet little thing doing my treatment, Cindy, massaged my neck and shoulders like they had done her wrong and she was having her revenge! After that came the reflexology. I was a little worried that it would be as spirited as the massage had been but it was thankfully very enjoyable - I only wish that Cindy spoke English so she could have explained to me what body parts my feet were telling her had issues! The best part for me though was the last step, hot towels wrapped around my feet and legs - I just love me a hot towel!

Make your own feet happy at Happy Foot Spa - they have 4 locations which you can find details for all of at: www.happyfootspa.ca or visit the one I did in Yorkville at 70 Yorkville Avenue, Unit LR4 - 416-962-1500.

Backstage and on the runway for Lucian Matis Spring/Summer 2013

Going backstage at Fashion Week is always a trip - lines and lines of models getting their hair and makeup done and people running everywhere - what seems like utter chaos somehow turns into perfectly coiffed and made up models strutting beautiful clothes down the runway!

Grace Lee, Lead Makeup Artist for Maybelline was on hand again this year designing and directing the looks. I especially love the one she came up with for the Lucian Matis show - striking and simple - totally something that can be worn in the real world too!

Grace started with a base of Maybelline Dream Fresh BB 8-in1 Beauty Balm to perfect the skin. The brows were filled in and then set with clear Great Lash Mascara. For the eyes she used a mixture of a taupe Eye Studio Color Tattoo and clear Baby Lips to give it that glossy effect and the lashes finished with a coat of Volum'Express Mega Plush. And my favourite part, the lips, are a mixture of On Fire Red and Electric Orange Color Sensational Vivids Lipcolor (coming your way this January.)
Jorge Joao, lead stylist for Redken came up with this gorgeous flowy look with a little help from: REDKEN Iron Shape, REDKEN Fashion Works 12 and REDKEN Shine Flash 02

And of course there were clothes - there was a series of very sheer garments - that don't seem very practical to me and ones made out of croc embossed leather or pleather that didn't seem to fit the models very well so I can't imagine they would look good on normal people - so I'm going to ignore them and concentrate my pictures on stuff I would love to buy and wear, these gorgeous prints!

Eyeshadow to love for Halloween from Illamasqua and Make Up For Ever with bonus Candy and Games!

Ok fine, I don't really need an excuse to buy more eyeshadow but it does make me (and my bank account) feel better if I at least fool myself into thinking I do and Halloween is an excellent reason if I ever heard one! Sure you could go and buy the cheapie stuff from the seasonal aisle but that crap isn't going on my face - so here are a couple that I am checking out that of course will not only be good for costume parties but also to wear any time!

Illamasqua Fundametal Palette - $54 - what makes this great for face (or hair or body) comes in an array of unique textures and statement-making colors that can be combined for a variety of effects. Includes a Liquid Metal in Molten Pewter, a matte Cream Pigment in Bedaub - mint green and two bright Powder Eye Shadows in Hype and Inception.
Make Up For Ever Black Tango Palette - $50 - this lace-embellished compact features four limited-edition, sultry shades of Aqua Cream: Black with Red Highlights, Black with Green Highlights, Black with Blue Highlights and Ivory - a smudge-proof, ultra creamy, highly pigmented eye shadow that will not crease or fade which makes it perfect for all-night partying and includes a double-ended nylon brush for easy application on the go.

Both palettes are exclusively available at Sephora and sephora.com.
Along with eyeshadow, Halloween is the perfect excuse to buy tiny little chocolate bars - also known as "fun sized"! It is a little known but scientific fact that tiny chocolate bars take more energy to unwrap and consume then they contain actual calories thereby creating a calorie deficit which makes them an excellent way to actually lose weight! Isn't science great?!
I also get into the mood of the season and waste time by playing online Halloween games - my particular favourites are Halloween Nightmare at http://halloweenarcade.com and Haloweenie 5 Slots at Ladbrokes - which you can find to play games here.

Primed for perfection with Hourglass, Victoria's Secret and Cargo!

I am not the most dedicated of primer wearers, especially during the summer - I just find that adding an extra layer of product to combination skin just ends up making my skin feel heavy and greasy especially in hot weather! Now that fall has arrived, I'm breaking out my primers again trying to find ones that feel weightless, keep my makeup in place and don't clog my pores - here are 3 that I'm loving and are worth trying if you have the same issues:

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer - 10ml - $21 - an oil-free mineral primer with SPF 15 that helps even out skin tone, neutralize redness and provides the perfect base for flawless makeup application and keeps it looking fresh, while absorbing excess oils and minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores.

I am amazed at how much this primer helps on my oily t-zone - I used to have to touch up my foundation in the afternoon because it had disappeared but now all I need is a bit of powder and I'm good for the rest of the day!

Available at Sephora and sephora.com.
VS Pro Airbrush FX Shadow Correcting Primer - 28ml - $18 - with a weightless formula has a subtle peach tint to instantly correct the look of dark shadows and spots as it creates a smooth, velvety surface and ensures a flawless foundation application that lasts.

What's nice about this one is because it has a bit of colour already, you don't necessarily need to apply foundation all over your face after you use it - just apply foundation to areas that really need it and leave the rest be!

Available at victoriassecret.com.
Cargo Blu_Ray Activating Face Primer - 30ml - $34 - get ready for your close-up - with this lightweight primer developed for the high definition film biz to help reduce shine, refine pores, and to visibly reduce fine lines and imperfections. Free of all the things you don't want: oil, silicone, paraben, fragrance and talc.

I avoid cameras like the plague so I'm not sure how good it looks on film but in person it really does even things out and creates a perfect canvas for makeup!

Available at eBeauty.ca.

Martin Lim for Reitmans Holiday 2012

Reitmans has done it again, a capsule collection with an amazing Canadian designer at such affordable prices you're going to be rubbing your eyes to make sure you're reading it right!

This time it's Martin Lim - a Montreal based design duo who have created a beautiful collection of dresses for the holiday season.

I can barely take an hour of a home improvement project with my husband so that fact that the husband and wife team of Danielle Martin and Pao Lim manage to design together so beautifully is vastly impressive to me!

There's lots to love about their collection - the modern silhouettes, the rich colours and the surprising details that make the dresses feel unique, special and expensive.

Available November in 28 Reitmans stores across Canada as well as online at reitmans.com. - I'm going to be snatching up this little teal number so you'd better not get in my way!

Fragrant Friday - Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme

This month has seen the re-launch of a classic fragrance:

Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme - 25ml EDP - $82, 50ml EDP - $95, 100ml EDP - $121, 200ml Body Lotion - $59, 200ml Shower Gel - $48 - with top notes of neroli, raspberry and a hint of tart green mandarin; heart notes of jasmine and orange blossom; and base notes of vanilla, heliotrope and sandalwood.

My understanding is that fragrance hasn't been so much changed as just fine-tuned a bit as the designers wanted the fragrance to mature a bit as they have since it was first introduced in 1992.

I don't think I have ever smelled the original version but I understand it was a lot more floral - the re-launched version is much more to my taste as I do really like the fruity and sweet aspects of it!

Available now exclusively at The Bay and come December, will also be available at Holt Renfrew, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques, Murale and Sears.

And of course every great fragrance needs a great commercial to go with it - great being of course one that involves beautiful women, hot men, amazing scenery and a sports car and in that case Pour Femme has it all! Enjoy the making of video and drink in all the eye candy...
