Gaga: No You Can't Read Her Panda Face!

No, it's not a scene from a horror movie.  Lady Gaga appeared on Japanese TV with this eccentric eye makeup: she was obviously inspired by Japanese Mangas... or she tried to do the smokey eyes thing by herself! I swear, that's how I look every time I try to get that smokey eye effect!

That makeup is so ugly though, it's impressive.

Shimmer on with The Body Shop!

If you're a fan of The Body Shop Shimmer Cubes, you will be thrilled to hear that four new palettes have now been launched as well as two new shades of Carbon eye Definers!

Shimmer Cubes - $22 - In 4 new shades: Blue Moon - indigo blue, starlight silver, snow white, midnight black, Bunch of Violets - orchid purple, candy pink, pearly white, velvet plum, Green Light - pure turquoise, mint green, silver grey, forest green, Pretty In Pink - velvet pink, soft pink, pearly white, stardust grey and 2 existing shades: Sugar Plum and Chocolate Box

Shimmer Cubes provide four cubes of subtle iridescence. Each shade contains a high concentration of make-up pearls of different sizes and shapes, which means that the pearls both attract and refract the light, subtly and delicately. They can be applied wet or dry.

Carbon Eye Definer - $13 - in three shades: Carbon Black, Carbon Brown and Carbon Blue - for intense eye definition in a water-resistant formula that has a smooth texture that can be blended and smudged.

Bio-Oil - not just for scars and stretch marks... who knew?!

I was at an event for  Bio-Oil last week which I went to thinking I already knew everything about it and how much can there be to say - it's for stretch marks, right? That's how much I know...

Beauty expert, Sandy Gold was on hand to exhort the wonders of Bio-Oil - being as low-key and subdued as she is, it was hard to get a handle on whether she actually likes the product or not... if you've ever met Sandy then you know I'm totally kidding and if you haven't met her, just look up "perky" in the dictionary and that will tell you everything you need to know (and you'll see a picture of her)!

She soon set me straight that Bio-Oil is for a whole lot more than just stretch marks! Here are some of the other uses for this head to toe major multi-tasker: as a facial mist (when mixed in a spray bottle with water) eye makeup remover, lip balm, for fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, as a  face and body moisturizer, nail and cuticle treatment, bath oil, for shaving, as a hair treatment, after sun care and itch reliever.

My favourite tip from Sandy was Bio-Oil as an at-home spa hydrating facial treatment: just soak a facecloth in a bowl with warm water and 5 drops of Bio-Oil. Wring out the cloth and lay it over your face and relax for several minutes. It smells great, is super relaxing and afterwards your skin will feel so soft and moist!

Bio-Oil - 60ml - $12.99, 125ml - $21.99, 200ml - $29.99

Score your own multi-tasking marvel at retailers across Canada as well as online at www.londondrugs.com and www.well.ca

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet - matte finish reinvented!

Your lips and nails are going matte this fall thanks to a new lipstick from Chanel - Rouge Allure Velvet as well as a velvet top coat for nails.

The lipstick has an innovative formula that combines the mattifying and smoothing power of silicone microbeads with the luminosity of ultra-thin mother-of-pearl particles for shine-free lips with rich and radiant colour. This isn't your mother's cakey, dry matte lipstick though, Rouge Allure Velvet contains a jojoba oil derivative to make it emollient, weightless and moisturizing.

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet - $40

La Distinguée - beige with peach accents
La Raffinée - fresh bright rosewood
L'Exubérante - intense, luminous pink
La Ravissante - light coral with amber shimmers
La Fascinante - deep magnetic red
La Sensuelle - intense violet plum
La Somptueuse - sophisticated red brown
L'Exquise - refined brown with a coppery touch

Le Vernis - $27
Pirate - the re-release of a legendary flamboyant red
Rose Exubérant - intense pink
Rose Caché - soft and natural

Mat Top Coat Velvet - $27 - can be applied over all Chanel nail enamels to give them a matte finish. Apply over dry nail enamel.

Available September 26th at The Bay and then October 31st at all Chanel Beauty counters.

How are you feeling about matte?

This week I'm obsessed with... Katima'A Facial Mask!

Katima'A Facial Mask - 10 masques - $52 - contains 10 packets containing Rhassoul clay and 10 packets with Argan oil.

I'm a sucker for anything that needs some prep, it makes me feel like a scientist so this mask is right up my alley!  The Rhassoul clay is a powder which has to be mixed with the Argan oil liquid mixture and they each come in their own individual serving packets to be mixed together before each application.  The set even comes with a little ceramic dish and a spatula for mixing and applying!

I recommend doing the mixing over the sink as the powder likes to fly all over the place. They combine quite easily into a very unattractive grey mixture which you then apply a thin layer of to your face.  If you want to have a lot of fun, put it on and then hide behind a door and wait for your husband to come into the room - this never gets old!

I love clay masks because they always give me the feeling that they are sucking the impurities right out of my skin and this one doesn't disappoint!  They recommend you leave it on for at least 5 minutes but I like to leave it for at least 15 minutes and once washed off, my skin feels clean, soft and smooth.

If you like clay masks, smooth skin and looking like the undead during your beauty treatments, I highly recommend this one!

Dior Capture Totale Serum de Teint vs Clarins Skin Illusion Natural Radiance - battle of the foundations - part 4!

For the last foundation battle I thought I would try something illuminating:

Dior Capture Totale Serum de Teint SPF 15 - 30ml -  a revolutionary serum foundation that gives skin a radiant, high definition perfection in every dimension. It contains a broad band of multi-toned pigments that create a more subtle, real, and natural effect than the four-part pigment palette (red/yellow/white/black) usually used in foundation. It also treats all the signs of aging, boosts collagen, nourishes, replenishes, and plumps skin. It's ideal for mature skin, dry skin, or dull skin that lacks radiance.

I tried the lightest colour 010 which is a perfect match.  Because it's also a serum, I found the formula to be much thinner than I usually find foundations to be which is actually really great for the summer as it gives it a super light "no-foundation" feeling.

VS

Clarins Skin Illusion Natural Radiance Foundation SPF 10 - 30ml - has a Light-Optimizing+ Complex to capture, diffuse and intensify light immediately.  Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away for an even, radiant complexion. Contains a Silicium mineral extract to hydrate and tone the skin and deliver a feeling of suppleness and comfort as well as a plant-based micro-patch that acts like a reservoir providing time-release hydration to keep skin supple, replenished and comfortable all day long.

I went with the lightest shade 103 Ivory and since my last Clarins foundation was this same shade I knew it would work. It feels nice on and blends very easily.

These two actually have a lot in common including a pump bottle and a rather strong smell - which I could live without!  I had expected I would like the Clarins best but I'm going to have to go with the Dior - it's just so natural and light feeling and makes my skin look so damn good and glowy that I can't not pick it!

I am out of new foundations to try so feel free to look back at some of the previous battles!

Gorgeous greys - Chanel Le Vernis Black Pearl and Bourjois So Laque! Bleu Asphalte swatches!

I'm a big fan of black nail polish but it seems a little harsh for summer so I've been lightening things up and trying out some greys instead - here are 2 I'm loving:
Chanel Le Vernis Black Pearl which seems more like a silver grey blue to me - it's hard not to love Chanel but I am not impressed that I got a big chip after only 2 days of wear! Since it was just the one finger, I'm hoping it was an error in my application technique!
Bourjois So Laque! Bleu Asphalte is a dark grey with a hint of blue - like a stormy sky!

Sugar Me Smooth - gave me super smooth and moisturized skin with just one shower!

Sugar Me Smooth Body Scrub - Lime, Tropical Mango or Vanilla Essence - 350g - $19.99 - I love sugar scrubs and I have been looking for one that I like as much as I did the now discontinued Jessica Simpson Desserts one - and I think I've found a winner with Sugar Me Smooth! I especially like that it's all natural containing only ingredients that I not only can pronounce, but I even know what they all are! I actually wouldn't mind if it had a stronger scent - all the scents are pretty mild but what I really like about this scrub is the layer of moisture it adds to my skin, so much so that I don't actually even need to moisturize afterwards - just remember to blot yourself dry though and not rub so as not to disturb the moisturizing film!

You can introduce yourself to this and other Sugar Me Smooth products over at The Shopping Channel on June 27th at 11am, 3pm and 11pm - www.theshoppingchannel.com

Colour Correct your skin imperfections with Lise Watier, Quo, Avon and Physicians Formula!

Ever looked at a colour corrector and thought - that looks really cool but I have no idea what all those colours are for? No worries, here's a quick primer on what colour does what:

lilac/mauve - brightens sallow skin
mint/green - covers redness
yellow - covers darkness
beige - neutralizes
apricot - brightens dullness and yellow complexions
pink - highlights
brown - contours

Lise Watier Portfolio - $30 - with 5 colours: lilac, yellow beige, green, ivory and brown.
Quo Colour Corrector - $19 - with 4 colours: mauve, mint, yellow and beige. Available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Corrector Palette - $9.99 - available in 2 shades: light and dark with 4 colours: lilac, pink, apricot and yellow.

Available from your Avon rep 1-800-265-AVON or online at www.avon.ca
Physicians Formula Mineral Wear 3 in 1 Correcting Concealer - $13.49 - in two sets to correct, cover and highlight: green/light/pink or yellow/light/pink.

The best tip I can offer when using them is too go easy, especially with the unusual colours like green and yellow and I always find they work best when I mix them with a bit of my foundation or concealer rather than use them straight to avoid having green or yellow blotches on my face!

- Lisamarie -

KenzoHomme Woody - for your manly man!

KenzoHomme Woody EDT - 50ml - $68 - 100ml - $90 - with top notes of mint and basil; heart notes of Madagascar black pepper and rosemary; and base notes of Atlas cedar wood and vetiver.  It comes in a funky looking matte brown bamboo bottle engraved with leaves.

I have found lately that a lot of new men's fragrances smell way too girly for my taste but that is not the case with this one, this isn't something I would ever put on by mistake, the smell is all man (but not in a sweaty gross way, more like a "I want to jump your bones" kind of way - and I suppose with a name like "Woody" that's not too far off the mark)!

Now that Kenzo has been acquired by LVMH Fragrance Brands Canada, I'm hoping that it will be easier to find it here. I like giving Kenzo fragrances as gifts and up to now it has been hit and miss and I would usually end up having to order it from Sephora.  You can still find it at Sephora as well as at The Bay.

This week I'm obsessed with...Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair Eye Treatment!

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair Eye Treatment - 15ml - $48 - made with a proprietary blend of fruit stem cells and a high concentration of fat-soluble Vitamin C that work at the cellular level to repair skin DNA damage and encourage new cell growth to aggressively firm and eliminate dark circles and fine lines around the eyes. Antioxidant-rich fruit juices and plant oils hydrate and improve elasticity.

I have been making an effort to incorporate more organic products into my skincare routine and one of my favourite brands is still Juice Beauty.  Not only is the super light texture and feel of this eye treatment great but the dispenser is also a nifty applicator that gives you a bit of massage action while you apply the treatment. It has no smell that I can detect and absorbs quickly with no sticky or greasy residue. My skin does feel a bit firmer and tighter around my eyes and I'm hoping that after more use that benefit will continue to increase!

And here's some great news for you Optimum Point lovers - all the Murale locations are now carrying the Juice Beauty line!

Alternatively you can find it at eBeauty.ca, The Shopping Channel - www.theshoppingchannel.com, Sephora and Sephora.com.

Foundation smarter than you are from Josie Maran, Avon and Almay!

I like the idea of a foundation that just knows what shade my skin is and will instantly turn that colour as soon as it hits my face - it's a magical concept that really appeals to me!  Unfortunately in my case it works better in theory than in reality - these types of formulas still come in shades - usually only 2 or 3 in light and medium tones. Unfortunately they only seem to suit those who fall in the light/medium shade group, if you are fair like me or dark skinned none of the shades are likely to suit you. Boo!

For everyone else, here are the ones that I think sound interesting and wish would make a shade for me:

Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation - 30ml - $55 - available in 2 shades: light/medium - for the lightest skin with yellow-olive undertones to medium skin with yellow-olive undertones; and medium/dark - for medium tan skin all the way to the deepest skin tones - with Moroccan Argan Oil it naturally nourishes and hydrates while smoothing fine lines and leaving skin balanced, strengthened, healthy and even, keeps oily areas shine-free and dry spots naturally moisturized.  What I especially like the sounds of is that it is supposed to suspend over fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing and correcting the visible signs of aging.  When I met Josie a couple of months ago, she did mention that a shade for fair skin was in the works so here's hoping!

Available at Sephora and Sephora.com.

Avon Ideal Shade Custom Shade Foundation Lotion SPF 15 - 30ml - $15 - available in 3 shades: light, medium and medium deep that are formulated with custom-colour technology that adjusts to your skin tone.  The coverage is sheer, smooth and natural-looking and illuminates skin while it covers imperfections.

Available from your Avon rep 1-800-265-AVON or online at www.avon.ca

Almay Smart Shade SPF 15 - 30ml - $19.49 - in 3 shades: light, light/medium and medium - also comes in an anti-aging formulation with SPF 20 as well as skin balancing with SPF 15

Stick it to your lip colour! Lise Watier Lip Kiss Crayon Gloss in Mango Punch and Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Chunky Cherry swatches!

I am loving me some stick lip products this summer - they are so portable and easy to apply on the run even when I don't have a mirror handy! Here are the two in my purse right now:
Lise Watier Lip Kiss Crayon Gloss Mango Punch - don't be scared by how intense the colour seems - it's a lot less scarey when it's on your lips!
Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm Chunky Cherry - again the colour is very wearable and I really love how moisturizing this feels on! I was annoyed that it didn't come with a sharpener seeing as it's much larger than any large sharpener that I own is until I realized that it swivels up - duh!

Have you been loving any stick products lately - do share?!
