Test Driving - L'Oréal Professionnel Hairchalk!

L'Oréal Professionnel Hairchalk - 50ml - $25 - in 8 shades: Sweet Sixteen Pink, First Date Violet, Blue Ocean Cruise, Garden Party, Coral Sunset, Coffee Break, Bronze Beach and Black Tie - that offer all the joy of off-beat colour without permanent results.

They call it a chalk but it's really a liquid which makes for quite a different application experience compared to the traditional chalks that I've tried before. They recommend applying it with a sponge but I found that more of the colour ended up in the sponge then on my hair so instead I held a piece of paper towel under the section of hair I was colouring, poured the colour directly on my hair and then used the paper towel to spread the colour over the whole section - it was a little messy but worked better then the sponge. My only caution, don't wear a good shirt to do it you are going to get a bit messy!

I gave the Coral Sunset shade a try but with my dark auburn hair it probably wasn't the best choice, it really didn't show except in certain lights - something more dramatic like blue or green would have had more impact. If you have light hair though you can pretty much take your pick of shades - it's all going to show! 

Once the weekend is over and you have to go back to work au naturel or are ready to change shades, it's gone in a couple of shampoos - and while it is there, you don't have to worry about it rubbing off on your pillowcase at night or flaking off your hair - it really is colour without any fuss or commitment!

Achieve the hot new "rooted" hair look with Clairol and our Contest!

It was a little more work then my usual colour - rather then a bottle that you mix the colour and developer in there is a brush and a bowl - the upside to this method is that it's much easier to make sure everything gets mixed together properly - the downside is that you get the full effect of chemical stink without a covered container to protect you! Once it's mixed you are meant to use 3/4 of the solution on your roots and then mix the provided serum with the remaining solution and use that for the lengths - thankfully the serum takes away the chemical smell and makes the whole process much more pleasant! Applying with a brush took a little bit of getting used to but the solution is nice and thick so it was quite easy to get the colour on my head without any spilling or splattering. 30 minutes later I washed it out to hair that is a glorious shade of auburn - I don't know that the 2 separate steps made my colour a lot different from how it usually looks but this shade is  great so no complaints from me!

Yorkville gem - Oskar On Scollard Hair Studio!

Hidden away in Yorkville is a jewel box of a salon - Oskar On Scollard Hair Studio - walking by if you didn't look down as you passed you could miss it, and that would be a real shame! Unlike other Yorkville salons that I've been to that seem to try to cultivate an atmosphere that is so exclusive that I never feel fancy enough to be there, Oskar's has a welcoming vibe that is friendly, relaxed and perfect for spending a few hours getting beautified in.

I recently visited Darren, the senior colourist at Oskar On Scollard for a summer colour refresh. What I really liked about him was that rather then just showing me hair swatches and then applying the colour I picked out, he took the time to discuss the pro and cons of various options and I ended up with one that wouldn't have been the one I would have chosen but was the one that would blend best with the colour already in my hair - this is the reason to go to an expert!

Once my hair was a rich auburn shade I was off to see Ethan, the senior stylist for a blowout. You might not realize how important a good blowout is after colour but the longer you can hold off washing your hair after colour, the better off you (and your colour) will be - I always try and leave it for at least 2 days - and if you have a great blowout you will have the volume to hide that fact that your hair might not be the cleanest. This time there was so much nice volume in my hair I was able to go 3 days without washing it!

And while I loved my colour and blowout I have to say that my favourite part of my visit was the Gloss Treatment that was applied to my hair after the colour - which left my hair so smooth and shiny it was like glass - I plan on making this treatment a regular part of my life!
