Looking Fresh While Slowly Melting: My Summer Makeup Essentials from Wonderblush, Revlon, NYX Cosmetics and Benefit!

I am all about an easy makeup routine come summer. Not only does the heat make me lazy, but I've also finally accepted that anything I put on my face is likely to migrate somewhere it wasn't originally intended to be so putting on as little as possible seems to be the smart plan.

 

To achieve easy summer beauty, I start with the flawless skin canvas we created in our Summer Skin Perfection post and simply add a little colour, a little glow and just enough polish to look healthy and refreshed without risking any dramatic makeup meltdowns. 

 

So here are my four summer essentials for achieving that effortless "I look this great and didn't even try" look:

 

Most important? Blush. 

 

Blush is what brings life, colour, and definition back to your face - especially if you belong to my special pale-people club and aren't using bronzer...

 

Wonderblush Le Fondant Cream Blush in Aube - $46 - available in five gorgeous shades: Camélia - soft mauve, Aube - coral nude, Ruban - bright pink, Figue - rosy plum, and Cerise - cherry red - -  a cream blush that delivers buildable colour with a balm-soft texture and a natural second-skin finish. 

 

It melts beautifully into the skin, adds a healthy glow, and blends so easily that even those of us applying makeup before our first coffee can manage it. Swipe directly onto the cheekbones and blend with your fingers or a brush. I am partial to Aube, a coral-nude shade that is universally flattering and gives that perfect "I spent the afternoon strolling through a seaside market" flush and since I am a sucker for pink, also love the bright pink Ruban for a healthy glow with a little more drama.

 

Bonus points: the same shade can be dabbed onto lips and across the bridge of the nose for that cohesive, sun-kissed look we all pretend happens naturally.

Speaking of lips...

Complicated eyeshadow routines and summer weather are not natural allies. One quick swipe of colour is basically all the commitment I'm willing to make when it's 30 degrees outside. Which makes this a winner:

This liquid eyeshadow delivers exactly what its name promises: glow. Not chunky glitter. Not fallout. Just a gorgeous wash of luminous colour that takes about three seconds to apply. Highkey Lychee is my particular fave - it gives lids a pretty, polished shimmer that instantly makes it look like you put in far more effort than you actually did. Obviously my favourite kind of beauty product.

Mascara is always the final, and generally necessary step for me - although I will admit that on especially hot days I sometimes skip it entirely and accept my fate as a slightly glamorous albino bunny thanks to my annoyingly blonde lashes.

Gone but not forgotten... products I have loved and lost and what I am ready to love (again)!

As a beauty blogger I'm sure you can imagine that I have a LOT of products and am always testing out something new - so it's actually rare for me to use something up, never mind four somethings - these are strange days indeed!

Benefit Hello Happy Soft Blur Foundation - such a perfect light formula that perfects skin with a no-makeup look;
Revlon PhotoReady Candid Anti-Pollution Setting Powder - the built in sifter makes it mess free, so easy to use and travel with;
Dior Serum de Rouge in 855 Carmine Crystal - the perfect red and the stick format made it so easy to apply anywhere - sadly discontinued;
Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil - the format and colour were perfect so of course arrrrrrrrrg - discontinued!

And when I do use something up I see if I have anything new to try or rummage through the vaults where I keep anything that I tested already and liked enough to keep - and this is what will be replacing the empties:

Stila Hide & Chic Fluid Foundation - 30ml - $51 - a liquid foundation that offers discreet, covert, medium coverage with a featherweight feel and natural finish in 30 shades - I tested it out in September last year and loved it enough that it went in my "definitely" stash for when I needed a foundation replacement.

Nude by Nature Translucent Loose Finishing Powder - $30 - sets evenly over the skin, naturally extending make-up wear with a unique feather-light formula that helps control oil and shine, while disguising fine lines and wrinkles with its light-reflecting micro particles. The powder is composed of active natural ingredients including the native Australian kakadu plum, known for its abundant vitamin C content; and kaolin clay for a radiant flawless complexion. Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Mini - $20 - a two-in-one cream blush and lip color formulated with hydrating ingredients including mango butter, avocado oil and apricot oil for a buildable, blendable tint. I debated getting Flip which is a true red but ended up picking Werk which is a dusty rose figuring that would be a more natural look on fair skin when I use it as a blush - I also really appreciate that it comes in a full and mini size - if I don't end up loving it and it languishes in the "meh" pile I won't have wasted as much money! Know the feeling you get when you reach into the pocket of a jacket you haven't worn for a while and find a $20 bill? I got that same feeling when digging through my concealer drawer (yes I have a concealer drawer, what of it?) looking for a replacement for my Urban Decay and what did I find...

Holy crap - I was hoarding another 24/7 Concealer! And now I remember that when I bought the first one and loved it I picked up another one assuming that by the time I used up the first one it would be discontinued - I adore it when I'm right! Of course by the time I use this one up Urban Decay will have read this post, seen the error of their ways, and started making it again (hint, hint UD!)

The Beauty Project by Shoppers Drug Mart and a visit with Erika Jayne!

Tomorrow (Saturday, August 10th) Shoppers Drug Mart will be launching The Beauty Project - an event that encourages Canadians to experiment with new makeup looks by exploring the vast beauty product selection available at Shoppers Drug Mart! Erika Jayne of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fame was in Toronto Thursday with her Glam Squad to help kick off the event. As an avid watcher of any and all of the RH franchises, it was hard, but I somehow managed to control myself and not ask her my truly burning questions (Is Lisa VDP as big a scheming bitch as she appears to be on the show or did you ever find out why Dorit has a British accent seeing as she's from Connecticut and all...?) but rather limited myself to beauty related queries.

So in the spirit of The Beauty Project, I made it my mission to find out WWEW (What beauty products Would Erika Wear).
