Six products that will give your flat hair a run for it's money! From Matrix, John Frieda, Rene Furterer, Schwarzkopf, Pantene and got2b!

As the lucky owner of fine, limp, super-blah hair I am always on the hunt for something that will give it a little oomph - here are a few that I have been testing out lately:

Matrix Total Results Amplify Volume Wonder Boost Root Lifter - 250ml - $15 -features a targeted applicator for extreme lift at the root area or all over volume impact that lasts all day. Builds lightweight body with a flexible hold and no stiffness or stickiness.

I love the fresh smell and appreciated the lack of crunchiness which I often find is an issue with spray in products. I did notice a difference in results with this applicator then I do with normal sprays as it is able to get right at the root which is where I really want the volume! But what I'm really impressed with is the price - $15 for a salon product is pretty sweet - even sweeter, they have a whole line of Total Results products all at only $15 a pop!

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Dry Shampoo - 100g - $10.49 - a fine hair anytime volume refresher for when hair falls flat that absorbs oils and greasy build-up that weigh hair down, adding texture to fine hair and lifting strands from the roots to increase fullness. Use on dried, styled hair as needed throughout he day.

No matter what volumizing product I put in my hair in the morning, by afternoon it's looking limp again, this time because my roots tend to get oily as the day wears on. This is why I am in love with this new spray from John Frieda. It comes in a slim container that is easy to hide in a desk drawer or a big purse and with just a few sprays to my root area, oiliness is banished and my hair is light and full!

Rene Furterer Volumea Volumizing Conditioning Spray - 125ml - $27 - for fine and limp hair to give lift to hair at the roots. With natural carob extract to provide controlled body and to create volume throughout hair. For light airy hair that has a very natural look.

With a hefty price tag and a less than pleasant smell, you know this one has to be really good to have made the list! I get such awesome body from this spray that I can forgive both transgressions! My big complaint is how hard it is to find the line - they carry a few of the products at Sephora but not this one or several of the other ones I love so I always end up either bumping into it in some random salon or googling it when I am trying to track something down!

Schwarzkopf Professional Osis+ Hairbody Volume Style & Care Spray - 200ml - $19.75 - for volume, light styling control, conditioning, easy combing and anti-static effect.  Apply on damp hair and blow dry or leave to dry naturally and style as required.

This is my go-to spray on days when I don't have time/can't be bothered to blow dry my hair - not only does it add volume, it also adds a bit of texture to give me the beach-babe look as opposed to the too-lazy-to-dry-my-hair look!

If you're looking for something under $10, here are a couple that work great and won't cost you much:

Pantene Fine Spray Gel Root Lifter - 170ml - $5.99 - apply directly to the roots of wet or dry hair to create volume and add shine. Also guards against moisture that causes your style to fall flat even in high humidity.

Also a great texture adder and because it is a gel, I find it does a better job then all of them of keeping my hair in place - so I tend to reach for this one if I am actually trying to achieve some sort of style!

Got2b Fat-tastic Instant Infusion Collagen Root-Boosting Spray - 177ml - $7.99 - a lightweight spray that lifts your hair at the root to give it instant volume.

This nozzle idea is genius - really a much better way of applying product to your roots!

Thcken up with mousse from Living Proof, Pantene, Phyto and Rene Furterer!

Mousse is a really easy way to give fine or limp hair some body, you just need to make sure that it doesn't dry crunchy or leave a flaky film on your scalp.  Another thing I've learned, don't be cheap with the mousse, you need a good amount of it for it to actually do it's job!  Here are a few of my favourites:

Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse - 142g - $21 (or $17.85 on The Shopping Channel right now) - body boosting, naturally moving for all hair types- this was recommended to me as the best mousse ever and I can't say that I disagree, this gives me such great body that I forget I have fine hair!  I don't love the smell but it doesn't linger so that's not a deal breaker!  Get it while it's on sale at www.theshoppingchannel.com

Pantene Mousse for Fine Hair - Maximum Hold - 187g - $5.99 - boosts strands for all-over volume that lasts - creates invisible support for fine hair structure, volumizes by lifting hair at the roots, locks in your style with all-day humidity protection - out of all the drugstore brands I've tried, this one is the best.  I find that sometimes with the less expensive ones, they dry very crunchy but this one doesn't.  The volume isn't as impressive as it is with some of the pricey brands, but for the cost it's not bad.

Phyto Intense Volume Mousse - Medium Hold - 200ml - $23 - adds body to all hair types, especially fine and limp hair - creates structure, increases volume and controls the style - contains Acacia collagen, a moisturizing active ingredient which hydrates hair while protecting from environmental stresses, as well as a natural UV filter. It smells great and I really did find this one hydrating, I even used it without my leave-in conditioning spray and didn't notice its absence!  Phyto products are available at Sephora.

Rene Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam - 200ml - $25 - brings body and structure to fine and limp hair - contains natural carob extract to create volume in the hair from root to end - an anti static ingredient provides a controlled look - hair is soft, shiny and regains a natural and flexible volume. I don't love the smell but I sure do love the amount of volume I got from this one! Available at Sephora.

Say Goodbye to Frizzy Hair with Rene Furterer and Phyto Anti-Frizz!

Being obsessed with frizz, I'm always willing to test anti-frizz products - here is the latest:

This Rene Furterer anti-frizz masque (100ml - $30, 200ml - $54) - from the Myrrhea line - is  a hair mask to be applied on rebellious, or curly hair after shampoo. You only need a small amount and just like the Myrrhea anti-frizz fluid (125ml - $30), it works pretty well: your hair feels softer and smoother.  Again the only thing I don't like about it is the scent, but since this mask must be rinsed out, it's a complete non issue.  You can find it at selected salons as well as Sephora.

I've known about Phyto for many years but I had never tried anything from this brand before. I know a few Caribbean girls who kept on gushing about this line and this hair relaxing balm (phytodefrisant, $24 for 100ml) is fantastic, indeed. Apply a dab of this translucent balm on wet hair, just before styling. It's designed for curly or permed hair and provides natural hair relaxing benefits.  It does not straighten your hair completely obviously, that's not the point, but it really eliminates the frizz. It left my hair smooth and not greasy at all which I really loved. It may seem pricey but to me it's worth every penny!

3 Products to become Little Miss Shiny Hair: Kim Kimble, Garnier and Rene Furterer

I was curious to try Kim Kimble's hair care line, now available at Target and online. For those who don't know Kim Kimble: she has worked with Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Shakira etc....so she knows a thing or two about hair.
Now my hair is quite dry and processed so I need a pretty good hair care routine to keep it healthy. The Peppermint Cream Shampoo is a nice little shampoo and for $9.99, it won't break the bank. This shampoo's texture is truly creamy, I mean like a dessert, something I would want  wanted to eat.  The mint scent is nicely refreshing, it tingles but -thank god- it doesn't burn (I had that happen to me once, with a brand I can't recall). One thing that you need to be aware of is it doesn't produce a lot of lather, so you may end up using more shampoo than you really need. Overall, it left my hair clean, shiny and smelling good.

Of course, I still need to condition my hair after, I have been using Garnier's Fructis Melting Hair Conditioner because it's so fast and cheap (less than $6)...and it does a good job!

 
The last step of my hair routine includes the excellent anti-frizz no-rinse Myrrhea fluid from Rene Furterer ($30/125ml).  This product truly excites me: it's the perfect product to protect your hair before a blow-dry. It definitely helps getting rid of the frizz, I could see the difference right away: my hair was smoother but not greasy at all after using it. You only need a small amount, so the bottle (despite a pricey $30) should last you for a long time. In fact, this product is so good that I use it despite a major flaw: I absolutely hate the smell.  Too musky and spicy for my taste. But like I've said it does a superb job. Now, if only Furterer could change the scent, I would never leave this product.

Dry shampoos make a comeback just in time for my busy life! Salon Grafix, AG Hair Cosmetics, CLEAN, Klorane and Rene Furterer

 Dry shampoos aren't a new invention - they've been around since the 70's and it seems with everyone's busy lives these days, they have experienced a  renewed popularity.  Traditional wet shampoos clean your hair and scalp of dead skin cells and sebum - the natural hair oils, which accumulate around your hair roots during the course of a day.  While the ingredients in dry shampoos soak up rather than wash away sebum which you then brush out and because that doesn't rid you of as much sebum as traditional washing, it's much gentler on your hair - and quicker!  With my fine hair I am always looking for less damaging ways to deal with it! And these dry shampoos sure are a lot better than baby powder which is what I used to use when  my hair was looking greasy and I didn't have time to wash it!

Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo - 4oz/12g - $7.99 - apply to roots by section spraying in short quick bursts 6-8" away from the hair - wait one minute then brush out.  It has a light, fresh smell and it's not supposed to have any white powder residue but it's probably still a good idea to protect your clothing if you use any dry shampoo while dressed. I didn't see any fallout from my uses and it made my hair feel very light and clean.

AG Hair Cosmetics - fastFWD dry shampoo - 3oz/86g - $22 - spray thoroughly through dry hair, work in with your fingers and brush or comb through.  This one has the best smell out of the spray ones, almost a citrusy sweet smell which I love, it also added great volume which I was really impressed with.  I don't usually get much volume in my hair without using a hair dryer!

CLEAN Dry Shampoo - 3.175oz/90g - $18 - this one is more like my baby powder solution - but in a narrow tipped bottle so it's much easier to control where the powder goes and the smell is heavenly!  Sprinkle it along your root lines and brush out or you can sprinkle it directly on your hair bush and brush it through.  Don't wear black when you do it though, it's a little messy! The best news is that the fragrance is time released, so you smell the wonderful scent all day long!

Klorane Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo with oat milk - 150ml/92.5g - $15.25 - spray in small sections 30cm away from the hair - wait 2 minutes and brush out thoroughly.  This one had the least amount of smell of all the ones I tried.  The fragrace is very faint. I was impressed with this one for how shiny my hair looked after using it. It looked freshly washed.

Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo with absorbent clay - 150ml/3.2oz - $28 - spray all over hair from a distace of 15" - leave in for 2 minutes, pat gently with a towel and comb.  It has a light botanical smell.  This one did a great job of getting rid of the greasy roots and I found it the easiest to use as you just spray it all over your hair in one go.  It really did add texture too which is great when you have fine hair!

Overall, I am very impressed at how far dry shampoos have come - they are not the big powdery mess that they used to be at all.  If I was the kind of girl who camped, these would be a godsend!  But even as a lazy girl that likes to hit the snooze button, they are still going to save my life!
