Cut down on shine with Avon, Nip + Fab and Hard Candy!

Solids, liquids or powders - there's lots of different ways to look less shiny these days. I'm not the biggest grease-ball in the world but I can hold my own and here's a few I've been trying lately to help banish shine:

Avon MagiX Essential Face Mattifier - 9g - $15 - skin perfecting formula helps reduce the look of flaws and pores and is ideal for the troublesome T-zone. Can be used with or without makeup for skin that looks matte up to 10 hours.

I've never tried one of these solid type formulas before although I have been tempted by the similar one Smashbox makes but balked at the much higher price tag - so I was a little worried that I would find it heavy and pore clogging. Not an issue, it goes on light and smoothly and eliminates shine for about 4 hours on me. My complaint is the smell of the the pad that comes with the mattifiyer - it's a horrible rubber smell that was so bad that I threw their pad out and substituted my own.

Available from your Avon rep 1-800-265-AVON or online at www.avon.ca

Nip + Fab Shine Fix - Mattifying Gel - 15ml - $12.95 - works to control shine and reduce congestion leaving pores cleansed and blemish free with: microsponges - which absorb excess surface oil throughout the day; seboclear - to purify and decongest; and nettle astringent - for its ability to decrease inflammation. Can be used twice a day - in the morning before creams and makeup and at night to promote a clearer complexion.

I am very fond of the texture of the gel and how easily it absorbs. I also appreciate that it doesn't make my foundation pill as some gel primers are prone to do on me. To preserve it, I only use it on my t-zone and you only need the tiniest bit to do the job. I get about 5 hours of shine control from it and the other nice thing about it, if you want to reapply once it stops working, you can reapply it over your foundation and it works just as well!

Available at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Hard Candy Welcome Matte Mattifying Translucent Powder - $8 - the name is so cute that I couldn't resist picking it up the last time I was at Walmart - I must admit for the price I wasn't expecting much so I ended up being pleasantly surprised to find that it does cut shine for longer than some of my more expensive powders do! I get better results when I use it with a brush rather than the sponge included and less is more, or I end up with a cakey looking result.

Available at Walmart.

If you've used anything I need to try let me know!

  1. I really like Paula's Choice Shine Stopper, it's a lotion like formula and you only need the smallest amount..works for about 6 hrs on me. I also love IT cosmetics Bye Bye Pores..keeps the shine down and gives your face that blurry finish!
