I Want The Sun to Shine, Not My Forehead - Part 1 (Cleansing)

I've tried so many cleansing gels for oily skin over the years, I could write a book about it! A few years ago, my face was not just oily, at times it was greasy as if I had dipped it in Vaseline. Yum. I hope you're not eating right now. Anyhow, after a few years of experimentation, my friends of the Greasy Face Fellowship and I had a few favorites products. However, it took me a visit to a Naturopath to understand the full extent of what it takes to keep my skin healthy. You can have the best skin care products in the world but your skin reflects your environment (the climate affects your skin greatly), your hormonal changes and your dietary habits. And yes, the first time I heard a Naturopath could help me in one consultation, I thought it was utter rubbish...but it wasn't. In the coming weeks, I will go over a selection of products I have tried and tips I've learned to keep that oily skin under control!

Clinique Liquid facial soap (Custom-fit to skin type in Very Dry to Dry, Dry Combination and Combination Oily/Oily skin formulas. ) $20
This soap is the first step of Clinique's 3 step skin care (cleaning, clarifying, moisturizing). I love the fact that you can change from one formula  to another (oily in the summer to combination in the winter for example) with the same result. The pump is convenient and allows you to use only the small amount you need, which also means this liquid soap bottle will last you forever (around 6 months). So at $20, it's a steal, and used in combination with Clinique's clarifying lotion (step 2) and moisturizer (step 3), it's a good choice.

Bioderma Sebium foaming gel - purifying cleanser $15
I've recently discovered this gel and it does a good job for a very reasonable price. It left my skin feeling clean but not dry like cheaper options can. Again, use a very small amount and the bottle should last for a long time.

Neutrogena offers a lot of choice for oily skin. While I liked their facial soap when my skin was super oily, I find their skin care line for oily skin too harsh overall. Same goes for Garnier, their facial soap was cheap but left my skin in bad shape. Clarins used to carry a good purifying cleansing gel  as well and you can even use their gentle exfoliating refiner daily, but the shear number of their products and the order in which I should apply them confuses me. I like simplicity, you see.

In any case, depending on how oily your skin is, you may have to experiment with a few cleansers to find "The One" for you. My friends of the Greasy Face Fellowship, our quest is never over!
